"A Day In Clay" is now "STAY In Clay!" : A take-home Local Clay Project for the public!

The Visitor Center Artist Camp is thrilled to announce that our 7th Annual public workshop, “A Day In Clay!” has received a 2020 Mini-grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, through the Copper Country Community Arts Council!

A Day In Clay! is a unique public event for the local community in Ewen, Michigan, with artist-guided workshops for creating pottery and sculpture with hand-harvested local clay, led by Visitor Center Artist Camp staff and resident artists.

UPDATE: Due to COVID-19 concerns and social-distancing requirements:

For 2020, “A Day In Clay” transforms into “STAY In Clay!”

STAY In Clay will run August 1st - August 8th, 2020, in partnership with the Ewen Trout-Creek School in Ewen, MI. We will be distributing FREE do-it-yourself kits to Make-Your-Own-Mug at home, using Ewen’s local clay, harvested and prepared by our artists at the Visitor Center Artist Camp.

The kit will come with a clay slab, paper patterns for cutting out the shapes, written and illustrated instructions for building a mug from the cutout shapes, and all the tools needed. We will also be posting a video tutorial online!

Kits will be distributed, mugs will be made at home, and the freshly-made mugs will be returned to us for firing in our kiln. We will glaze each mug with its maker’s color of choice, and once they are finished the mugs will be available for pick up!

Follow Us on Facebook for updates on exactly where and when to pick up your Take-Home Mug Kit!

“STAY In Clay” is FREE and open to EVERYONE!

But…WE still NEED YOUR HELP!

You’ll receive a handmade local-clay VCAC magnet as a Thank-You Gift for your donation of $50 or more!

This is a matching-grant, which means we need to raise an equal amount in matching donations to receive this grant money. We are about half-way to our $4000 goal! Can you donate to help us reach it?

Your contribution of $25, $50, or $100 makes it possible for us to provide this FREE educational arts and culture programming for the community, while making Ewen stand out as a destination in the Upper Peninsula!

Your donation is tax deductible! We run programing at the VCAC through our 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Art Shape Mammoth, Inc.

Visitor Center Artist Camp is an Artist Residency site in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, nestled between rural townships, abandoned mines, and the vast wilderness of the Ottawa National Forest.

Gathering artists from across the country to explore sustainable art practices influenced by the natural environment, we harvest local clay for pottery, build with locally sourced and milled lumber, and use reclaimed materials whenever possible. We collaborate with the local community to teach and to learn traditional folk arts, sustainable construction, and responsible land management practices.
